Skin and Oral Cancer Treatment

Care for head and neck cancers in Columbus, NE

No matter what kind of cancer you have (or suspect you have), the diagnosis, treatment and recovery process is incredibly frightening. The caregivers at Columbus Otolaryngology Clinic provide expert care for head and neck skin cancer, tongue cancer, tonsil cancer and vocal cord cancer.

Head and neck skin cancer

Most skin cancers of the head and neck are nonmelanoma skin cancers, which usually means they are easily treatable. However, some people do suffer from melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. When it develops on the head and neck, it can behave differently than it would in the rest of the body, requiring more aggressive treatment. That’s why it’s so important to have a caregiver who understands this part of the body. Our doctors can evaluate advanced head and neck skin cancer and perform surgery on the affected area.

Tongue cancer

Tongue cancer is a very serious form of cancer, and it requires treatment as soon as possible. For small tongue cancers, treatment often only requires removal of the tumor itself. However, patients who have larger cancers may need to undergo radiation, chemotherapy or other types of medical therapy. The experienced surgeons at Columbus Otolaryngology Clinic can evaluate tongue cancer, perform the procedure and help patients find a speech therapist and oncologist for follow-up care, if necessary.

Tonsil cancer

At first, tonsil cancer can be difficult to identify, because it may be mistaken for tonsilitis, strep throat or other viral problems. Symptoms can include:

  • Persistent sore throat.
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Blood in the saliva.
  • Feeling a lump in the throat or neck.
  • Sores in the mouth or throat.

After making a diagnosis, our surgeons are experts at treating tonsil cancer surgically, either by removing just the tumor or the tonsils completely.

Skin lesion removal

Not all skin problems of the head and neck are cancerous. You may suffer from skin lesions that are painful or bothersome and need to be removed. Our surgeons will examine the area and then either remove the lesion during a routine office visit or schedule an outpatient facial plastic surgery procedure.

Vocal cord cancer

Vocal cord cancer is also known as laryngeal cancer, or cancer of the voice box. Symptoms can include difficulty swallowing and hoarseness. Our doctors use imaging techniques to diagnose suspected cancer, and if they detect a growth, they perform a biopsy to determine if it is cancerous. They can surgically remove any cancerous tumors and help patients find follow-up care if necessary.
