Your thyroid — a small organ in the front of the neck — makes hormones that help in many different systems in your body. When it isn’t working right, that can create major problems. At Columbus Otolaryngology Clinic, we can perform procedures that can help treat problems of the thyroid. Those procedures include:

• Thyroidectomy (removal of all or part of the thyroid) – Thyroid cancer is the most common reason a patient may need a thyroidectomy. Other reasons include a noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid, an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), or suspicious nodules that can’t be identified as either cancerous or noncancerous.
• Needle biopsies for thyroid nodules – If we are concerned about a nodule on your thyroid, the first step in determining if it is harmful is performing a fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). This is a procedure we can complete in our office.

Sometimes, treating thyroid problems can be as simple as taking medication. Other times, you may need to have your thyroid removed and then see a cancer specialist for follow-up care.
